The defining feature of Hoya shepherdii is its foliage. The leaves are long, slender and noticeably fleshy, giving them the characteristic appearance that has earned this species its String Bean Hoya nickname.
The foliage develops along flexible stems which gradually become longer and more pendulous. With time, the plant can create a full cascade of narrow leaves, making it particularly attractive when grown in a hanging planter.
The succulent nature of the foliage allows the plant to retain moisture, although it still requires a well-draining growing medium and should not be left sitting in water.

Light
Provide bright, indirect light with some gentle morning or evening sunlight if available.
Good light helps maintain healthy growth and can encourage flowering. Avoid suddenly placing the plant in strong direct sunlight, particularly if it has previously been grown in lower light.
Water
Allow the growing medium to dry partially between waterings.
The fleshy leaves can store moisture, so Hoya shepherdii is more tolerant of occasional drying than consistently wet conditions. Water thoroughly when required and always allow excess water to drain away.
Temperature
Keep between 16–26°C during active growth. Protect the plant from cold draughts, frost and prolonged low temperatures.
Humidity
Moderate household humidity is generally suitable. Higher humidity can encourage healthy growth, but good ventilation is important to prevent problems associated with stagnant, overly damp conditions.
Soil
Use a chunky, airy and very well-draining Hoya mix.
A combination of orchid bark, perlite and coco coir or a light houseplant compost works well. The growing medium should retain some moisture while allowing plenty of air to reach the roots.
Feeding
Feed lightly during the growing season with a balanced houseplant or Hoya fertiliser.
Avoid excessive fertilising and reduce feeding during periods of slow growth, particularly through the darker winter months.
